Project Description
The Clarion County medium density fiberboard (MDF) plant produces 135 million square feet
annually, on a 3/4" basis, of MDF utilizing the hard woods indigenous to the western
Pennsylvania area. The thermal energy required by the plant is provided by EPI's fluidized
bed combustion (FBC) system. Fuel for the plant is generated from the plant waste stream,
which includes wet sawdust, purchased hog fuel, sander dust and resin impregnated waste
from board trim and reject fiber. The urea based resins in the waste materials present a
challenging emissions problem due to the fuel bound nitrogen and the resulting nitrogen
oxides (NOx) present in the combustion products. EPI's long history of successfully
dealing with these NOx emission problems in agricultural waste combustion systems for
large power boilers was a key factor in the selection of the fluid bed technology for this
application.
Selective noncatalytic reduction (SNCR) technology is applied to meet the stringent NOx
emissions requirements for the plant. Particulate collection is achieved utilizing a high
efficiency dry electrostatic precipitator (ESP).
The 141 million British thermal units per hour (MBtu/hr) generated by the combustion
system provides 20 MBtu/hr to a thermal fluid (TF) heater which supplies the energy
required by the Siempelkamp continuous board press. A waste heat boiler transfers 44
MBtu/hr from the gas stream to produce 45,000 LB/hr saturated steam for the fiber
refiners, fiber conditioners, building heat and other miscellaneous plant loads. The
exhaust gases from the TF heater and boiler, combined with the combustion products from
the burner provide 75 MBtu/hr of heat input to the Westec fiber dryers at a precisely
controlled temperature.
Scope of Supply
EPI provided the fluidized bed combustion system, fuel storage and metering system, NOx
abatement systems, TF heater system, boiler, feedwater and deaerator systems, ESP, ash
collection and disposal systems and all associated ducting, dampers, fans, instruments and
controls for the MacMillan Bloedel Clarion MDF Facility.
